Pershing Square
Spring 2022
Professor Samuel Clovis
Pershing Square in Downtown Los Angeles has undergone many changes throughout its 160 year history. The current design, by Ricardo Legoreta and Laurie Olen, has been critiqued for extensive use of concrete and minimally providing shade to users. In matching the spirit of the ongoing changes by Agence Ter and Gruen Associates, the project first examines the socioeconomic context of the park and proposes a new landscape design and cultural center to serve the people of Los Angeles.

The redesigned site contains a variety of programs, including sports courts, a water feature, an art gallery, and playground. Flowing geometry connects nodes in the urban environment such as the metro, crosswalks, and nearby businesses. Generous tree cover offsets heat gain and offers areas of respite to visitors. The cultural center sits on the northeast side, integrating with the park's circulation and providing amenities to the public.
