The College of
Environmental Design
Spring 2023
Professor Yasushi Ishida
The project proposes a landmark tower to serve the school and public in downtown Pomona.
Closer to the ground, the college remains close to Pomona's vibrant downtown, the arts district, and a mural of the late artist Karl Benjamin. With the building's height, users are afforded views of the San Gabriel Mountains to the north and the Chino Hills to the south.
The field condition - derived from an exercise early in the semester and inspired by the Los Angeles freeways - serves as a tool to design the program, circulation, and facade system. Public and specialty functions sit in the plinth; private program such as offices and the studios are placed in the tower.

Studios enjoy elevated views of Pomona and the surrounding topography. Heat gain is reduced through the facade system, while users benefit from the open floor plan and flexible work environment.
